Wat Pariwat (The David Beckham Temple)
📍 Bangkok, Bangkok
A working Bangkok temple whose ornate decoration hides pop-culture cameos — most famously a small gilded figure of footballer David Beckham among the traditional guardians at the base of the main altar.
Most visitors come to Bangkok’s temples for serenity. Wat Pariwat offers that too — plus a treasure hunt. Look closely at the riot of carved and gilded detail around the ordination hall and you’ll start finding cartoon characters, superheroes, and a tiny golden David Beckham, added by craftsmen with a sense of humour.
Why It’s Interesting
The temple takes the centuries-old tradition of folding contemporary life into sacred art and runs with it. The Beckham figure (dating from the late 1990s, when he was at the peak of his fame) is the celebrity headline, but the surrounding decoration rewards slow looking. It’s a genuine place of worship, so the cameos sit quietly among the saints and guardians rather than shouting for attention.
Getting There
Wat Pariwat sits in the Yan Nawa district in southern Bangkok, near the Chao Phraya. It’s an easy taxi or ride-hail hop from the riverside or the BTS. Dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered — as you would for any active temple.

Field report
Wat Pariwat is a working Bangkok temple whose artisans hid a joke with a thesis in the decoration: among the traditional guardians at the base of the main Buddha there's a small gilded David Beckham, added in the late '90s when a football-mad abbot agreed the era's most worshipped figure belonged among the icons.
Finding him is a proper hunt — the temple's carvings are dense with hundreds of figures, and the search reveals more cameos the guides will point out with glee (superheroes, cartoon characters, a whole visual argument that devotion absorbs its century).
I found Beckham in eleven minutes, a time I am told is competitive. The temple itself is lovely and quietly proud of its fame. Faith with a sense of humor and an archive of its own era: Bangkok in one lower-left corner.
