Oyama Senmaida Rice Terraces
📍 Chiba, Kamogawa
Hundreds of tiny terraced rice paddies stair-step down a Chiba hillside, mirroring the sky in spring and glowing with thousands of LED candles on winter nights — the closest 'thousand rice fields' to Tokyo.
Tucked into the hills of southern Chiba, Oyama Senmaida — “the thousand rice fields of Oyama” — is the nearest classic rice-terrace landscape to Tokyo, and one of the prettiest. Some 375 tiny paddies step down the slope in a patchwork of curved banks.
Why It’s Interesting
The terraces change completely with the season. In spring, freshly flooded, each little paddy becomes a mirror, and the whole hillside reflects the sky and clouds. In summer it’s vivid green; in autumn, gold. Best of all, on cold-season evenings volunteers stage a candle-light illumination, dotting the terraces with thousands of LED “candles” that trace the curving banks in the dark. It’s farmland as quiet theater, kept alive by locals.
Best Time to Visit
Spring for sky reflections, and the cold-season evenings for the LED illumination — check the schedule before going.
Getting There
Easiest by car from Kamogawa; bus or taxi from Awa-Kamogawa Station otherwise. Combine it with the southern Boso coast.

Field report
Oyama Senmaida is the closest 'thousand rice terraces' to Tokyo: hundreds of tiny stepped paddies stair-stepping down a Chiba hillside, each one mirroring the sky in spring like the hill is holding up pieces of it.
I walked the ridges between paddies — squirrel-width infrastructure, finally — while frogs announced my progress paddy by paddy like town criers. Farmers keep this landscape alive by hand and by ownership-share volunteers from the city, which is the only reason it still exists; flat land farms easier, but flat land doesn't do THIS at sunset.
In winter they line the terraces with thousands of LED candles and the hill becomes a slow constellation. Spring flooding season for mirrors, winter nights for lights. Respect the ridges: it's someone's rice, not a set.
